With its dynamic corporate structure, Aegean Exporters’ Association (EIB) has increased its exports consistently over the last year, transported Turkey’s products to the world
Between Europe, Asia and Africa, Turkey has a unique geographical location at an intersection point of different cultures. This location, combined with a productive and hardworking human resource, provides a great export potential. Aegean Exporters’ Association, which gathers Western Anatolian exporters under its roof, which has the highest potential, has made exports of 11.8 billion dollars in year 2017. What is more striking is that this amount is about 9 percent higher than 2016 figures.
GENERAL EXPORTS OF THE AEGEAN IN 2017
Aegean Exporters’ Association exported 1 billion 80 million dollars in December 2017 period. EIB exports in December 2016 was 922 million 460 thousand dollars. The exports of EIB increased by 17 percent compared to December of 2016. Aegean Exporters’ Association has had 10 billion 900 million dollars of exportation in 2016. In 2017, with a 9 percent increase, Turkey earned 11 billion 838 million US dollars of foreign exchange.
Exports of Aegean Exporters’ Association in 2017 produced 6 billion 448 million dollars in industrial products, while exports of industrial products from EIB increased by 12 percent. Exports of agricultural products made in the Aegean region rose 3 percent to 4 billion 520 million dollars. Exports of the mining industry increased by 14 percent to 869 million 695 thousand dollars.
In 2017, 8 of the 12 associations within EIB increased their exports compared to 2016, while 4 were behind their 2016 performance.
ÜNLÜTÜRK: “TARGET GOAL”
Aegean Exporters’ Association Coordinator President, Sabri Ünlütürk, stated that they were happy to exceed $ 11.5 billion export target set forth by EIB for 2017. As for 2018, they have a target growth of 8 percent.
Economists reminded that at the beginning of last year, 2017 was defined as a year in which demand will not be as high, Ünlütürk said. “Despite this unfavorable outlook, the Aegean Exporters’ Association members have exceeded its target of exporting 11.5 billion dollars at the beginning of 2017 by exports to more than 200 countries. In order to repeat a similar success in 2018, we will continue our design, innovation and R&D-focused work for value added product exports. We will carry out the fairs, sectoral trade delegations and purchasing delegations organizations” Ünlütürk said.
“THE ROLE OF KGF IS IMPORTANT”
Announced in early 2017 by the government, the target put forth by 250 billion TL Credit Guarantee Fund (KGF), economic measures and stimulus packages of the Medium Term Program has been reached. Ünlütürk, while stating that Turkey has achieved the 153.3 billion dollars export target also said; “For 2018 we have an export target of 169 billion dollars with an increase in exports of 8 percent. We aim to provide 12.5-13 billion dollars contribution to this target as EIB”.
24 TIMES AS MUCH GROWTH IN 38 YEARS
While the exports of Aegean Exporters’ Associations were at 523 million 28 thousand dollars in year 1980, they increased continuously in the following terms and reached 12 billion 458 million dollars at the end of March 2018.
In 1980, the Aegean Dry Fruits and Products Exporters Association was the leader in exports with 180 million 562 thousand dollars, while the Aegean Tobacco Exporters Association ranked second with 148 million dollar exports and the Aegean Textile and Raw Materials Exporters Association third with 138 million 470 thousand dollars.
By the year 2018, the Aegean Apparel and Apparel Exporters ‘Association was at the top of 1 billion 332 million dollars in exports, while the Aegean Iron and Nonferrous Metals Exporters’ Association ranked second with 1 billion 185 million dollars in exports.
The Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association was the third largest exporting company with an export value of 972 million dollars. These associations were followed by the Aegean Tobacco Exporters Association with an export of 962 million dollars and the Aegean Mine Exporters Association with an export of 889 million dollars.
Aegean Exporters’ Association, in 1987, reaching 1 billion 38 million US dollars export figure passes 1 billion for the first time, in 1995, 2 billion 88 million US dollars of foreign exchange earned in Turkey. Aegean exporters, who signed an export of 5 billion 172 million dollars in 2005, reached the historical summit with exports of 12 billion 458 million dollars in the last one year exportation on 31 March 2018.
Within the Aegean Exporters’ Associations, which increased exports the most after 1980 was Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association. Exports of aquatic products and animal products reached 972 million dollars at the end of the year, up 183 times as of March 31, 2018, from $ 5,365,000 in 1980.
The Aegean Apparel and Garment Exporters Association (EHKİB) signed a 1 billion 332 million dollar worth of exports at the end of March 2018, while the company had a total of 8 million 638 thousand dollars in exports in 1981. EHKİB exports increased 155 times. EHKİB, in 2014; 1 billion 470 million dollars in exports made the history peak.
The Aegean Mine Exporters Association, which joined the Aegean Exporters’ Association in 1991, exports $ 8 million 341 thousand dollars in the first year. By the end of March 2018, it increased its exports by 107 times and reached $ 889 million.
IMPORTANCE TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS
While 74 percent of the exports made by the Aegean Exporters Associations in 1980 were agricultural products and 26 percent were industrial products, by 2018 the share of agricultural products decreased to 38 percent while the share of industrial products rose to 55 percent. The mining sector, which is not represented in EIB exports in 1980, accounted for 7 percent of EIB exports in 2018.
AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS IN 2017
The fresh fruit and vegetable sector grows in 2017 with the usage of air cargo it had taken to the agenda the previous year. It is targeted that 10 percent of exports will be done by air cargo in the midterm.
Turkey Exporters Assembly Member of the Board of Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Exporters Association’s Chairman of the Board, Riza Seyyar stated that after the discount agreements in 2017 air cargo transport became one of the priorities of the sector. Pointing out that it is one of the outputs of Fresh Cherry and Grape URGE Project carried out by the Aegean Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association of Air Corps, Seyyar said, “We can process the products we gathered from the garden quickly and present it to consumers in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai, London, Barcelona the next day. We took important steps in 2017 to make this possible. Air cargo extends the freshness of our products at least one week,” he said.
Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, which had a successful year, increased its exports by 7 percent in 2017 and increased it from 691 million dollars to 739 million 527 thousand dollars. Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association’s exports in 2017 are 567 million dollars of sliced fruit and vegetable products, fruit and vegetable exports of 172 million dollars. Seyyar stated that there is an increase of 20 percent in fresh fruits and vegetables in general and an overall increase of 7.2 percent in the products supplied. “There is a 4.5 percent in the fresh fruit and vegetable exporters and approximately an 8 percent increase in products. Beyond our goal, 2017 is not a bad year in terms of exports. These increase rates do not show any chance of catching our 2023 targets. These rates need to be at levels of 15 percent. We have communicated our views in Ankara about making a special incentive for the products for shelf and brands. Hopefully in 2018 we will get results on this. Aegean exports 40 percent of the exports. In fresh vegetables, this corresponds to 12 percent of that,” he said.
Turkey’s traditional export products, seedless raisins, dried figs and dried apricots, the main products exported to the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, Turkey in 2017 to 784 million 194 thousand dollars in foreign exchange gain. Birol Celep, President of the Aegean Dry Fruit and Vegetables Exporters Association, emphasized that they had achieved their targets in 2017 and said, “We are excitedly entering 2018. We are hopeful that we will come to good places with the state incentives of agriculture and industry as declared by Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci.”
Celep expresses that dried fruits have a share of 54 percent, dried apricots 16 percent and dried figs 15 percent. “While the UK is in the first place in our export markets, this country is followed by Germany and the Netherlands. The European Association, which is the traditional export market for the dried fruit sector, is in the first place with 65 percent of our exports.”
Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters Association’s exports in 2017 became record-breaking. By the year 2016, the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters Association, which increased its exports by 103 percent, increased its exports from 124 million to 251 million dolars to increase its exports.
Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters Association President Davuter said that 455 thousand tons of table olives and 287 thousand tons of olive oil are expected to be produced this season according to the National Estimates of Olive and Olive Oil Council (UZZK).
The Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association, which rose two places in 2016, climbed one step in 2017 and became the owner of the third step of the summit with 935 million dollars in exports. The Association of Exporters of Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products developed its exports by 16 percent in 2017.
In 2017, the exports of the Aegean Tobacco Exporters Association dropped by 6 percent and it ranked fourth in exports with an export value of 928 million 556 thousand dollars. Mahmut Özgener, President of the Association of Aegean Tobacco Exporters, said, “We are pleased to have reached the figures we aimed at tobacco and tobacco products in 2017. In addition to reaching our export targets, a number of decisions have been taken to make 2017 a more important year for the industry. The share of smoking cigarettes and cigarette smoking is constantly rising in the market. This was reflected both in the amount of production and in tax losses. At the beginning of the summer, the measures taken by the government and the implementation of these measures seriously lowered the market share of fugitive products. Aegean Furniture Paper and Forest Products Exporters Association, declined by 3 percent of exports in 2017, gained currency in Turkey was 556 million dollars. Association Chairman Nurettin Tarakçıoğlu said, “We closed up with an increase in 2016. 2018 is creating new opportunities. The downsides are encouraging. We are hopeful in 2018, we are confident that we will close the year with better performance as the paper sector and forest products “.
Aegean Cereal Pulses Oil Seeds and Products Exporters Association fell by 22 percent in exports in 2017 with the highest decline in exports. The exports of Aegean Cereal Pulses Oil Seeds and Products Exporters Association went to record as 292 million dollars.
EXPORT OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS IN 2017
Aegean Exporters’ Associations exported industrial products in 2017 worth of 6 billion 448 million dollars.
The Aegean Apparel and Garment Exporters Association, which has the largest share in exports, entered the records as the largest export unit in the EİB sector in 2017 with the exports of 1 billion 265 million dollars in 2017. Emre Kızılgüneşler Aegean Apparel and Apparel Exporters Association stated, “the second 6 months of 2017 in the direction of expectations began to increase in the numbers.” He also said:” We caught the figure of 1 billion 265 million dollars. This is the highest figure in the Aegean today, a record. We expect this process to continue in the first 6 months of 2018. Briefing the steps taken in last four year’s period, Kızılgüneşler said, “EIB Fashion Contest was organized 4 times annually with great success. Technical Textiles Research and Implementation Center (TEKSMER) was founded. We organized the national participation to Premiere Vision Manufacturing Paris Fair two times a year since 2015 as well as FASHION SVP London Fair between 2015 and 2017. We also handled the national participation to Munich Apparel Source Fair since 2017. Aegean Region Apparel Sector Future Vision Coloquim was organized in 2016. Project for increasing the production and design competencies of the intermediate staff of wedding dresses productions was completed in June 2017. UR-GE project for increasing the competitive power of EHKIB member companies was started in 2017 and IF Wedding Fashion Fair was taken under government support.”
Aegean Textile and Raw Materials Exporters Association reached an export figure of 250 million dollars with 18% increase in exports, while Aegean Leather and Leather Products Exporters Association had exported 138 million dollars. The leather sector has been able to increase its exports by 15 percent compared to 2016.
The Aegean Iron and Nonferrous Metals Exporters Association, which ranks third in the year 2016, increased its exports by 8 percent to $ 1 billion 28 million and rose to second place. The Aegean Iron and Nonferrous Metals Exporters Association succeeded to be one of the two Associations that exceeded the $ 1 billion bar in 2017. Halil Şahin, President of the Association of Exporters of Aegean Iron and Non-Ferrous Metals, stated that exports as well as the domestic market has increased. After 3 years, our production reached over 37 million tons. I hope we will increase this number even further in 2018,”
MINE SECTOR EXPORTS IN 2017
The Aegean Mine Exporters Association, which has achieved success in exports in China and India markets, increased exports by 14 percent in 2017 and took fifth place in the list with an export figure of 869 million dollars. Mevlüt Kaya, Chairman of the Aegean Mine Exporters Association, said, “We had serious difficulties in 2017 after exiting from a storm like 2016. But we ran to create new markets without sacrificing our production policy and our export policy. Mining industry in Turkey has scored a record 27 percent in a rising overall. I believe in the future of this. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has begun to initiate ‘national energy and mining’ policies, adding a different excitement and energy. As long as there are no complications in the year 2018 in the field, we are one of the sectors that can really reach the 2023 targets.
A RECORD IN EXPORTS FROM EIB IN FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2018
Aegean Exporters’ Associations are signing a new export record every month. Exports of the EIB increased by 18.4 percent in March to 1 billion 206 million 53 million dollars. EIB in March of 2017 exported 1 billion 18 million dollars. In March, the EIB reached the highest export figure of its history with a monthly export figure of 1 billion 206 million dollars. The highest export figure of the EIB in the previous month was November 1, 2017, with 1 billion 182 million dollars. While Turkey’s exports in March had a 11.5 percent increase with 15 billion 105 million dollars.
In the January – March period of 2018, the Aegean Exporters’ Associations, which recorded an export loss of 3 billion 361 million dollars, had a 23 percent increase in exports. The last one year export of EIB is 12 percent with 12 billion 458 million dollars in history with the highest export figures.
The exports of industrial products made in the Aegean Exporters’ Associations in March were 692 million 861 thousand dollars while the exports of industrial products increased by 19 percent. While the agricultural products sector increased by 22 percent to 437 million 919 thousand dollars, the exports of the mining sector remained flat at 75 million 271 thousand dollars.
The Aegean Cereal Pulses Oil Seeds and Products Exporters Association reached 93 percent export growth rate after they overcame obstacle in front of the importation of poppy seeds to India. The Association increased the exports the most in March with 54 million 109 thousand dollars in exports.
With the introduction of the year 2018, the Aegean Iron and Nonferrous Metals Exporters Association, which topped the Aegean Exporters’ Association, took place at the summit with an export figure of 150 million 50 thousand dollars in March.
The export growth rate of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association, which broke export records every month for about 1.5 years, lagged behind the previous months in March. EZZİB, with a growth rate of 48 percent in the month of March brought 36 million 302 thousand dollars of foreign exchange to Turkey.
The Association of Exporters of Aegean Apparel and Apparel exporters increased their exports in March by 35 percent compared to March of 2017 and amounted to 131 million 619 thousand dollars. EHKİB in the January – March period reached 351 million dollars with an increase of 25 percent. Their export values rose to 1 billion 332 million dollars in the last one year.
The Association of Exporters of Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products; in March, had an export growth of 21 percent and reached 91 million 614 thousand dollars. Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association reached the export figure of 972 million dollars in the last 1 year exports and is very close to his target of 1 billion dollars.
The exports of the Aegean Mine Exporters’ Association were similar to March of 2017. EMİB, has brought an underground wealth of 75 million 271 thousand dollars to the economy.
Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters Association reached a record in export prices in dried fig exports, and increased its exports by 12 percent in March and reached the export figure of 70 million 383 thousand dollars. The Aegean Tobacco Exporters Association has made an export of 63 million 993 thousand dollars.
The Aegean Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association exports 62 million 328 thousand dollars in March with a 20 percent export growth rate, while the Aegean Furniture Paper and Forest Products Exporters Association exports increased by 11 percent and reached 56 million 332 thousand dolars.
In March, while the exports of the Aegean Textile and Raw Materials Exporters ‘Association were at a level of 24 million 6 thousand dollars with a 6 percent decrease, the Aegean Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association reached 13 million 656 thousand dollars with a 23 percent increase in exports.
Aegean Exporters’ Associations in March had 1 billion 206 million dollars in exports, Germany received the largest share with142 million 67 thousand dollars in Germany followed by the US with 79 million dollars worth of exports, and Britain with 76 million dollars.

“Deri’n Fikirler” Contest
Deri’n Fikirler Leather Production and Design Competition organized by the Aegean Leather and Leather Products Exporters Association has been held for seven years in order to improve design and production quality in Turkish leather sector and to increase share of value-added products in exports.
The event was held this year with the main theme of “Propaganda” in order to highlight the real beauty of the designs. Jak Galiko, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Leather and Leather Products Exporters Association, stated that teams of leather engineers and designers are preparing unique designs each year.
Fashion Design Contest
EİB Fashion Design Contest, one of the most popular competitions in its field, has been successfully organized for 13 years in order to meet the need of innovative, visionary designer of Turkish ready-to-wear sector by Aegean Apparel and Apparel Exporters Association. Suitable to the theme of NEWSTALGIA! , unique designs that are in harmony with contemporary lines and nostalgic reflections of our culture have been created.
Fashion Design Competition, A competition that has become a ‘brand’ in the field. It has been followed with great interest by graduates and students who are educated in fashion design among Turkey’s 46 university departments. Emre Kızılgüneşler, Chairman of the Association of Aegean Apparel and Apparel Exporters Association, stated that in the past 13 years, thousands of designers have gotten the chance to introduce themselves and their designs to well-known names in the fashion and ready to wear sectors, making it easier for the industry to meet talented designers.
