Neither a few days nor more is enough for discovering Ayvalik… It is not a place to visit but a place to live. However we have suggestions for those who want to visit Ayvalik at a limited time…
If you visit Ayvalik for a day, hit the road and be there as early as possible. Prefer Ayvalık toast as a morning breakfast. Our recommendation is the Kanelo Café behind the municipality building or Nesos Café in Cunda.
Visit the historic Ayvalık mosques, the city’s most visited monuments. While doing this, you will also be walking around the bazaar. Taste curd dessert at the patisseries on the main street. Our recommendation is Güler Tatlıhanesi and İmren Patisserie.
Take a boat from the pier to Cunda island. Have a step at Cunda bazaar and streets. When you get hungry, taste the “papalina” fish that you can find at all the restaurants in the area.
Do not break the tradition and have your Turkish coffee at Taş Kahve. We recommend you to sit in the interior of the building to experience the real atmosphere.
In Cunda, visit the Rahmi Koç Museum. The museum is five minutes’ walk away from the shore, located at the restored Taksiyaris Church.
In the evening, return to the city center by boat again and follow the historic İnönü Avenue and see the old Ayvalık houses. This road will take you to Şeytan Sofrası (Devil’s table) to experience one of the bost beautiful sunsets in the world.
TWO DAYS IN AYVALIK
After having spent the first day in the same way as we just told you, on the second day we offer a boat tour that routes through the surrounding islands. The boat, which departs around 11 o’clock in the morning, travels to Cunda and other virgin islands, and returns at around 16:30 and 17:00.
THREE DAYS IN AYVALIK
If you have two nights and you already ate and spent time in Cunda, you can choose pubs and restaurants for second evening’s dinner at Tenekeciler Street in the city center. After the first day of the general tour and the second day of the fabulous boat trip, you can explore Cunda with your car on the third day. Starting from Patrica in the back of the island, it is a good idea to visit Cunda by car or on foot.
A WEEK IN AYVALIK
So, you either have a reservation at one of the hotels or pensions around Ayvalık, or you are coming to the cottage of yourself or a close friend. First of all, if it’s summer, enjoy the unique sea of Ayvalık every day. Besides the boat tour and Cunda tour, we recommend you to visit the streets of Ayvalık outside the bazaar. Also, if you have a car, be sure to visit the local olive groves and olive oil plants nearby. You can go to Adatepe, Yesilyurt and Çamlıbel villages which are one and a half hours away. You have a chance to visit Assos too.
In addition to all of these, we recommend you to visit Lesvos island of Greece if your passport is available. The boat departs from ayvalık port and arrives in Lesvos in two hours. You have chance to return in the evening.
How to get there: All intercity bus companies have a route to Ayvalik. To arrive by plane, you can go to Edremit Koca Seyit or İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport and then by bus to Ayvalık. If you have your car and mobile phone, open the navigation app and enjoy the trip!
What to eat: Ayvalik region’s local fish is papalina. The season of papalina is August. Ayvalık’s octopus is also nice.
Do not return without seeing: Ayvalık mosques, Rahmi Koç Museum, Cunda streets, Patrica Cove, Şeytan Sofrasi, historic Ayvalik mansions on İnönü Street.
