Shining star of tourism and agriculture: ÖDEMİŞ

Ödemiş’s establishment dates back to 3000 BC. The city, which is 123 meters above the sea level and has typical features of Mediterranean climate, has 1086.2 kilometers square acreage.

Ödemiş county as a center of population has a history that dates back to 111000 BC and includes many civilizations throughout its history. Today it has the appearance of a modern city climbing up to the full development level.

Ödemiş was freed of Greek invasion on 3rd of September 1922 and it became a part of Turkey Republic in 1923.

The county is surrounded by Bozdağ mountains,2157 meters high, from the north and Aydın mountains , 1646 meters high, from the south and established in the Küçük Menderes plain.

Ödemiş is ready to be a province thanks to its geographical position besides it is a growing city with its population,  economic and cultural structure, agriculture and industry.

Ödemiş hosts to many works of art from Hittite, Phrygia, Byzantine and Roman times. People have the chance to live different kinds of tourism from winter tourism to religion tourism, tableland tourism to eco-tourism. It is the attraction center of tourism with its natural herbs, regional women handcrafts, silk weaving, local food, famous meatball and regional games such as camel wrestling, Rahvan horse race.


Ödemiş, with 132.000 population, is stated in Küçük Menderes basin which has over 565.000 population. Ödemiş is 30-35 kilometers away from the nearby counties. Torbalı, 50-55 kilometers away from the county, and Selçuk, 75 kilometers away from the county, developed on the opportunities of the connections among İzmir-Aydın roads. Ödemiş which is stated in the middle of Bayındır, Tire,Beydağ and Kiraz counties thanks to that it is the most efficient center of the east part of tha basin. Ödemiş is an important stock farming center, 100 kilometers awy from the izmir province. Considering the added value it provides to izmir, it is clear that the county has a scientific background of stok farming and animal products production.


According to the population censuses between 1935 and 2016 the county has a regular increase in population and there is not a big leap at the increase. The population increases slowly but regularly. The number of quarters increased from 16 to 99. The population is doubled, from 76.600 to 132.000 .

Despite the fact that the urban population rate is %77,3 all across Turkey, in Ödemiş 73.000(%56,7) of 132.000 total population live in urban areas, 59.000 people live in rural areas and 10.816 of the people in rural areas live in northern rural areas. These numbers, which is higher than only Kiraz, Kınık, Karaburun, Beydağ, Dikili and Bayındır counties, show us that most of the population lives in rural and occupied with agriculture.

Ödemiş is 19th among the counties which have low rate of household, with the rate 2,93 people per house. In Ödemiş households are small and mean of age is high. This situation is explained by the young population migration the other provinces or to the city center of izmir because of agricultural socio-economic background and to get a job.

Socio-economic development level; Among 872 counties in Turkey Republic Ödemiş is at 199. rank by means of development. In İzmir it is 5th least developed county away from the city enter.

The most important feature of our county, whose economy is based on agriculture and stock farming, that differs it from other counties is its city halls service area has %98,34 rural living area. The closest village to Ödemiş city center is 3 kilometers away and the farthest village is 45 kilometers away. 32 of 74 villages, that are connected to the county as neighborhood, are mountain villages.

In Ödemiş population distribution according to the economic activities; tertiary sector is number one with the rate of %33,9 ,commerce sector is number two with the rate of % 23,1 , number three is manufacturing industry with the rate of %18,7 , agriculture, stock farming and forestry has %16,3 rate and number five is construction with the rate of %7,8.


Ödemiş has the fetures of Mediterranean climate. It is hot and dry in summer, warm and rainy in winter. Natural vegetation in Ödemiş is lemuroid. It is possible to do irrigated or dry farming thanks to the convenient climate all across the county’s basins.


Stock farming has a great importance in the county. The rich soil and the opportunity to get 3 harvests in a year helps stock farming to grow and provides added value. Stock farmers in ödemiş gets their need of fodder corn and fodder by themselves thanks to the situation and they only provide concentrate feed from outside. This situation has great importance for stock farming to grow.Izmir province has the %9 of total milk production in Turkey. Ödemiş provides %4 of totl milk production of Turkey with Beydağ and Kiraz by produing 1200 tons/liters per day.It has great importance  in country’s milk and meat production with 135.500 animal. There are 135.377 bovines and 68.000 sheep and goats.

According to the 2014 statistics of İzmir Directorship of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, %74 of the 1674523 tons of milk was produced in Küçük Menderes basin. According to the TÜİK datum around %7 of 18.665.407 tons of milk production in Turkey was produced in Küçük Menderes basin. %41 of that production was provided in Ödemiş. In 2014 the milk production rate of Ödemiş was expounded as %2.7 of all milk production in Turkey. It took the first place in the lists by 122.666 cattle. Also Ödemiş followed Bergama, which was in the first place, with 50.970 sheep and goats.

At Ödemiş’s food production milk has the most important place with around 1.000 tons per day. Ödemiş cheese is a product with a brand value. On the basis of incentive policies since 2003 dairy farming and milk production has grown so much that %9 of Turkey’s was made in İzmir and %30 of that was made in Ödemiş. 29 dairies and charcuteries carry on business. Besides there are 31 milk collection facilities and 27 dairy processing facilities.

At tablelands sheep and goat farming shines out and at the basin, around the county and nearby counties there are lots of cattle farms. In Ödemiş agricultural activities are intense due to the convenient climate. It is a chance that Küçük Menderes river surrounds the county on the east and this river surrounds all the land and rich soil in the county. %47 of 101.814-hetare land in the county is farming land. Most of this land is used for growing vegetable and fruit production. In this 48.000 land 28.000-decare is irrigatable land. With the completed Beydağ barrage and the under onstruction Aktaş and Bademli barrages this number is going to increase.

In our region vegetables, field crops and greenhouse crops are grown by means of agriculture activities.Among all the products potato comes first at the production and sales. At  potato production in İzmir, Ödemiş comes first with %77. Throughout the province 465.000 tons of potato(1st and 2nd harvest) is produced and %81 of this is produced in Ödemiş.  Yellow lobe fig ‘Aegean fig’ and ‘ödemiş Potato’ are Ödemiş’s officially registered geographical indications.İzmir comes second after Aydın at fig production and fig tree number.

Potato production is made in 9.000-hectare around 342.000 tons as summer and autumn potato. This production provides 205.200.000,00 TL income to the county. Also on 1.300 -hectare land 16.250 tons of cucumber is produced nd contributed 16.250.000 tl to the county’s economy.

As for tomato production, for tomato paste, on 150-hectare land 12.750 tons and as edible tomato on 300-hectare land 22.500 tons is made and contributed to the county around 12.375.000 tl.

In our county there are approximately 600.000 olive trees on 6.000-hectare land, 33.500 tons of olive is produced and around 7.125 tons of olive oil is made of those olives. Olive oil contributes to county’s economy around 106.875.000 TL.

Cattle recording and vaccineing process is still continuing and all of 135. 377 cattles are recorded so far.

In our couty there are 78.000 thousand lactiferous cattles and milk production is around 1.150.000 liters per day. In the couty most of the milk is collected and processed by milk processing facilities. Present cooler tank number is 1248 and this contributes a lot to the county and country economy.

As for fruit; cherry, fig and chestnut comes first. Cherry is produced on 400-hectare land and provides 3.000 tons, contributes 22.500.000 TL. Fig is planted on 1500-hectare land and 9000 tons produced, contributes 58.500.000 TL. Chestnut is planted on 1000-hectare land, produced 8000 tons and contributes 64.000.000 TL per year.

In our county it is estimated that 55 million outdoor ornament plns are produced on 300-hectare land. 15 million of that production is dispatched.

In our region arboriculture is intensely done in Bademli village and this has great importance all around Turkey. In the county apiculture and honey production is made as well. There are 32.414 beehives and 277.312 kilograms of honey and beewax is produced this contributes 5.402.240 TL to the county.


Our county has an important place by means of fruit scion and outdoor ornament plants production. The Küçük Menderes basin is one of the unique basins all around the world with its climate, soil structure and plant diversity. In Turkey borders, it is possible to grow plants 12 months of the year in the region. Thanks to these featurs our county is convenient to fruit scion and ornament plant production especially due to the differences between tableland and basin climates many ornament species can be planted. This production has a great place in the last decade’s agriculture income and this rate increases every year.  In our region arboriculture is intensely done in Bademli village and this has great importance all around Turkey. Only Ödemiş Ornament Plants Grower Union’s production capacity is 25 millions of bushes, 8 millions of trees and coniferous tree and this provides 3 million dollars exporting income. This amount of production provides a good source of income for almost 600 families. Most of the ornaments produced in Ödemiş are sold to city halls and public enterprises. These plants are exported to many countries in the first instance Turkish republics such as Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Arab countries such as Iraq, Iran and other countries like Georgia, Romania etc.

Ornament plants sector is  sector hat has an important place and produces high added value.  Turkey is convenient to ornament production by means of soil and climate features, and it is source of genes for many ornaments. Ödemiş is an ideal region for ornament production. Around the county there are lots of places convenient for production of both potted plants and field/garden plants.  Park and garden plants are widely grown in Ödemiş and contributes in ever-mounting value. In 2014 its economic contribution margin was around 90.000.000 TL due to our country’s conditions and trade relation with contiguous countries.

Besides convenient climate and soil conditions, geographically being close to the market countries and crowded agricultural population is among important advantages. It provides job opportunities considering the plastics, transportation, seed growing, landscaping apart from flower growers in the sector.

Ornament plants is a sector that expands foreign trade volume correspondingly to the improvement. In 2016 it created 180 million dollars foreign trade volume. In 2016 the foreign trade deficit become 5.6 million dollars. Rate of exports meeting imports is %94. Sapling producers in Ödemiş exports fruits such as; apple, pear, quince, peach, apricot, plum, cherry, persimmon, pomegranate to Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkmenistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Uzbekistan.

Products such as; mixed pickles, cucumber, pepper, brined vine leaf are exported from Ödemiş to countries like, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Romania, Dubai .

Irrigation products, irrigation system setups, agricultural pesticide and irrigation tools are exported from Ödemiş to Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

Also, marble is exported to America and submerged pump is exported to Europe and South Africa.

Economy in Ödemiş which has fertile land that can yield 3 times a year, is based on agriculture. %36 of total acreage is farming land. More than 21 thousand families are engaged in agriculture.

Primary agriculture products growing in Ödemiş are potato, fig, olive, sesame, chestnut, tobacco, grapes and raw vegetables. Yellow lobe fig ‘Aegean fig’ and ‘Ödemiş Potato’ are Ödemiş’s officially registered geographical indications.

Despite the fact that Bursa comes to mind first when said chestnut production, %50 of total production is made in Ödemiş. Chesnut is sent to Bursa for candied chestnut which is specific to Bursa. Apart from that Bademli region has important share in fruit scion and cherry production.

Bademli Arboriculture and Agricultural Development Cooperative is active since 1968, has over 300 members and produces fruit scion, ornaments, olive oil, milk, yoghurt and ayran.  Another important product produced in ödemiş is leather overall cheese which is only produced in Ödemiş. There is no one that hasn’t heard of how delicious it is.


Ödemiş, a typical Anatolian city, lives together with its historical places and is in the way of being a modern city by continuing its development process. The county has reduced infrastructure problems caused by modern urbanization to minimum.  There are no facilities manufacturing with chemical and toxic waste in the county. Thus it is one of the rarest counties in the country that managed to protect its natural environment.

In spring and summer, Birgi, Bozdağ and Gölcük tableland attract many tourists and host many visitors.

Winter tourism has been reactivated thanks to the aerial ropeway and ski-resort which was projectizedyears ago and came to life at Ödemiş’s famous tableland Bozdağ.


Historical and Cultural Structures and Touristic facilities; Gölcük tableland is an alluvial set lake 18 kilometer away from Ödemiş and 130 kilometers away from İzmir. There is a 6-kilometer walking track around the lake. It is an ideal place for cross, troppy, paragliding, water sports, and football.


Point lace, lacework, tatting, canvas… The products made by women in Ödemiş knot by knot are sold at the bazaar which is set every Saturday. The yarn used in lace-making is particularly made by the lace makers. By combining fabric and lace motives in different colors and sizes they make different covers that can be used for many purposes. Women of Ödemiş produce souvenirs and special lace style ‘tel kırma’ at courses opened by city hall. The most attractive of these are the dresses designed of Ödemiş silk and exhibited at the fashion shows.

The women handcraft bazaar set on Saturdays, which is the biggest bazaar of the county, hosts to many local toursts.

By stating the facts like; in the past sericulture was as important as potato production, sericulture was supported in many ways due to the annihilation of dowery custom it was effected in a negative way, it is reminded that the project ,originated from EU applied at Kulp county of Diyarbakır, could be an example to Ödemiş and if they get help to ncrease the production by means of technical help and material, most of the manufacturers that gave up on  manufacturing will start producing soon. Sericulture was started in Ödemiş around 3500 years ago in Birgi  which had been capital of some seigniories. In 80s around 120 tons of silk was produced per year and almost all of it was consumed by locals even if it was more expensive than important silk, locals preferred home production.
