Aegean fishermen making three thirds of the Turkey’s seafood exportation

The aquatic products sector, which is among the star sectors of Turkey in exports, continued to increase exports in 2016 as well. In 2016, when exports of Turkey are following a flat course, exports of the aquaculture sector have increased by 15 percent to 794 million dolars. 56% of Turkey’s aquaculture exports were made to European Union countries. Among EU countries, Turkey the most exportation to the Netherlands (160,1 mln $). Italy (108,7 mln $) and Germany (86,8 mln %$) followed the Netherlands.

Aegean, the world’s largest exporter of sea salt and sea bream in Europe and the world, is known as “the white flesh prince of the Aegean.” It has become a trademark in Europe with its insatiable taste and especially due to the protein and Omega 3 oil which prevents diseases such as arteriosclerosis, blood pressure, heart, vascular and paralysis, because it contributes to immunity. Sea bass, known as the King of the Sea, attracts fish consumers abroad with its soft flesh and rich phosphorus content. By the end of 2016, 47 thousand tons of sea bream and 45 thousand tons of sea bass were exported from Turkey.

As of the end of 2016, Turkey has exported 70,000 tons of aquatic products worth 442.7 million $ to the European Union countries. In the European Union, the first order is “Fresh and cooled fish” with 46 thousand tons, followed by “Fish filet” with 15 thousand tons and “Frozen fish” with 3 thousand tons. Demand for these products has been increasing in recent years with the spread of freezing and cooling technologies as well as applications for canned smoked and various products.

The Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters Association conducts research and co-promotion activities on Turkish aquatic products’ branding, target and marketing strategies in existing markets, participation in international fairs, social media studies and various PR activities.


When we look at poultry products, Turkey has shown a rapid development and has risen to 10th place in poultry meat and 12th place in egg production all over the world. 16% of poultry meat exports and 33% of egg exports are made from the Aegean region.

Our poultry products sector has exported 620 million tons in exchange for 665 million dollars to 62 countries in 2016.


Our country is the first in the world to produce pine balsa in the world. The Aegean Region is the heart of the country’s beekeeping and is home to a large portion of the production of pine balsam. 90% of the pine balsa production in the world is exported from the Aegean Region in our country, and this exports of this product which is so important in terms of our country are being made intensively from the region.

The European Union countries are one of the most important markets for Turkey’s natural honey exports and the largest exports to the EU countries are Germany, France and Spain respectively.


The milk and dairy sector is one of the major production branches of the Aegean economy and is at the forefront in efficiency. Accordingly, the enterprises are mainly located in Aegean Region. Turkey’s most important dairy exports are kalemi cheese products in terms of value. Labne cheese and “Izmir tulumu” are some other varieties.
