UNESCO journey of Selçuk

İzmir is the 3rd biggest city of Turkey, and Selçuk is one of the two places in İzmir with UNESCO label. After a 21 years of waiting, Selçuk has been taken to World Heritage List on July 5, 2015. Although the UNESCO adventure is a short period of time considering Selçuk’s 8600 years history, still we can say that a long yearning has ended

The first step for Selçuk to receive UNESCO label was taken when Ephesus Antique City, together with Artemision, St. Jean Basilica and Ayasuluk Castle were taken to the temporary list of UNESCO World Heritage in 1994. On July 5, 2015, during the 39th World Heritage Committee meeting in Bonn – Germany, Ephesus Antique City was taken to UNESCO World Heritage Site List together with Çukuriçi Mound, Ayasuluk Castle and Virgin Mary’s House. Mayor of Selçuk Municipality Dr. Dahi Zeynel Bakcı stated that Selçuk’s being on the UNESCO World Heritage list is as important for World Heritage List as it is important for Selçuk, in terms of a  remarkable completion. Hesaid, “As a result of a 21 years effort and longing, Selçuk has made it to UNESCO World Heritage List. Selçuk’s difference from many other cities that made to the list is, Selçuk also included four complementary places as Ephesus, Ayasuluk, St. Jean and Virgin Mary’s House”.

Religious Tourism: “Religions are a Free Act”

Mayor Bakıcı indicated that St. Jean Church in Şirince neighborhood, where the historical texture is maintained in a joint project with İzmir Governor’s Office, is a remarkable location for the Christian society. He said, Selçuk is an important center for its unique history and nature, as well as for religious tourism. We will continue working, so that the religions are a free act. Thus, the renovation project of St. Jean Church we carry on with the Governor’s Office is important. Just like the renovation we did for Dimitrios Church. Mary’s Church is in Ephesus, and St. Jean Church is in Ayasuluk. It is important for Şirince that both churches are available for service. We own our values and make our county a place where Christians can freely and comfortably realize their traditions”.

Mayor of Selçuk Municipality Dr. Dahi Zeynel Bakcı listed the thing to be done in the second phase as, “Ayasuluk is a project with a wide scope. In the second  phase of this project all the structures in the castle will be renovated. All the roads in the castle will be illuminated. Security surveillance system will be installed. The avenues surrounding the place will be illuminated. The information boards will be reviewed and the missing ones will be completed. Furthermore, many observation terraces will be available in the castle”.

Ayasuluk is rising up

Mayor of Selçuk Municipality Dr. Dahi Zeynel Bakcı provided important information on the project details that would rise up the history. He said, ” Ayasuluk Project is a long lasting one. We started working on it in August 2015. We foresee that the first phase of the project will be completed in the coming months. We also started the tender for the second phase. When Ayasuluk Project is completed, Selçuk will gain an important destination area”.

In scope of the infrastructure studies carried on in coordination with the related institutions, during the renovation and organization of Ayasuluk Castle, Saint John and Ayasuluk Avenues are being reorganized.

The illumination of the interior part of the castle is completed. So, Ayasuluk Castle will be viewed better when the city is entered from Menderes and İzmir directions. In scope of the project, renovation of some parts of the city walls are also completed. When the second phase of the project is completed, all the city walls of the castle will be renovated.

The area has because a destination place that would attract both the local and foreign investors. Having the hotel Region as well, Pamucak is expecting local and foreign investors.

Selçuk Municipality reorganized Pamucak coast, having 250m2 closed and 50m2 open terraces with shopping stands, cafes, showers, breakfast places, restaurants, and children’s park, attracting visitors. “We have a wonderful beach”

Mayor of Selçuk Municipality Dr. Dahi Zeynel Bakcı emphasizes that Pamucak is an attractive investment place for local and foreign investors due to its long coast line and being an untouched region.  He said, “After the permit we received from Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board, there is no obstacle to open Pamucak Coast for tourism. Our only sensitivity is the preservation of nature. Pamucak has a wonderful beach and a capacity of 5000 beds, with a higher potential for new facilities.
