The Chairman of Aegean Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, Nurettin Tarakçıoğlu states that laurel leaves and oregano’s original aroma comes from Turkey’s unique geographical location similar to the many food products that grow in this fertile land.
Nurettin Tarakçıoğlu, emphasizes that the natural flora and the diversity of climate of the Aegean and Mediterranean region provide the growing crops with uniqueness, therefore demand to the Turkish food has been increasing each year. Nurettin Tarakçıoğlu also thinks that R&D plays a very important role in improving these natural tastes.
What are the Turkey’s outstanding features in terms of the food industry in general and non-wood forest products as well?
Turkey is endowed with abundant natural resources and there are very different agricultural products that can grow up in all around Turkey at the same season. It is an important advantage. Today when one says Turkish oregano, the product known as the best in the world due to its unique aroma comes to the mind. Similar to the laurel leaves, sage and rosemary, also some spice seeds like cumin,anis,fennel most of the other food products have matchless taste because of the geography of Turkey. Moreover, the mentioned products with these features can be produced nowhere else in the World and we are sharing these natural products with the entire world. In the upcoming period, we are planning to increase our supply to the world by extending the variety and quantity of our products. Our efforts on these issues have already started to effect not only the Turkey’s export figures, also our sectors’ labour figures positively.
What are 2016 export figures in forestry products?
Our export from the Aegean Region of Turkey is about 10.9 billion dolar in 2016. When it comes to Aegean Region’s forestry products, it is about to reach 300 billion dolar annually and the Aegean Region is also leader in both producing and exporting most of herbs & spices products naturally collected from the forest .
What are the present and potential markets of Turkey in this sector?
European Union countries have more than %50 share in Agean region’s export of forestry products. In addition, USA and Canada have important shares as well and our markets have become more various each year. Especially, rising trend of health care and cooking as a hobby increase the demand to our products. The media has an important role, too. We have demand from various countries. Turkey has know-hows and important companies and institutions and most of these companies are ready for Industry 4.0 & even for agriculture 4.0. We, as a Aegean Exporters’ Associations and Turkey Exporters Assembly support and give importance to innovation and research- development.
