Turkish Airlines responded positively to demand for delivering fresh fruit and vegetables

As an ongoing project by Agean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, UR-GE (Improvement of International Competition) for fresh cherry and grapes a group of people met at Fruit Logistica Fair in Berlin/Germany. At the second day of the fair representatives of 13 companies, Turkey Export Council Board Member and Agean Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Export Association President Rıza Seyyar, Turkish Cargo General Manager Turhan Özen, Turkish Cargo Vice President Halit Anlatan, Middle and South Cargo Area Manager Tarık Parlak and Izmir Cargo Manager Nesrin Elif Yaylalı met together. Mr. Seyyar stated that for sustainability in exportation, it is important to decrease delivery time to the customer and especially for short shelf life products like fresh fruit and vegetables. “To be safe as a big fish, first you have to be fast. To be present in international markets and to grow in export we have to improve value-added production and find ways to sell our products with higher prices. We believe that the best solution will be developed with cooperation with Turkish Airlines” Seyyar said.

Chile and Israel

Seyyar stated that Chile and Israel practices may be an example: “Last year in December in the scope UR-GE during our visit to Chile, we found out that although Chile produces less than Turkey it exports 3 or 4 times of Turkey depending on air cargo.” Seyyar added that fast delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables from all around Turkey, fish, flowers, agricultural products to all around the world with air cargo will increase the value of the export products. Seyyar also stated that, Turkish food exporters know all potential customers all around the world and in all product groups, but with logistic impossibilities and high cost of logistics the products cannot be exported.  Turkish Food sector target of 40 billion dollar for 2023 will be reached if THY air cargo increases the capacity and number of destinations.

Mobilizing the possibilities

Turkish Airlines Vice President Turhan Özen stated that improvement of cargo transportation is very related to passenger transportation but in recent years cargo transportation was successful independent of passenger transportation and Turkish Cargo will use all its sources to help exporters. Özen announced that new planes will join the Turkish Cargo group to increase the capacity “To increase transportation capacity will be possible by efficient planning. To ensure this we must work with exporters associations. We are ready to be in cooperation and work with the sector, to serve all around the world with affordable prices and sustainable mechanism. Seasonal fixed prices and destinations can be formed for product groups relative to information from exporters associations. We can guarantee price and service to all exporters included in this package.”

As a result of the negotiations, exporters associations and Turkish Airlines representatives decided to have a workshop in April and plan for package price and destination. The meeting was with; under the presidency of Agean Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Export Association President Rıza Seyyar; Turkish Cargo Vice President Turhan Özen, Cargo Vice President Halit Anlatan, Middle and South Europe Cargo Area Manager Tarık Parlak and Izmir Cargo Manager Nesrin Elif Yaylalı ’dan plus Agean Fresh Fruit Vegetables Exporters Association Vice Presidents Hasan Yılmaz, Ahmet Göksel, Board Members Sadık Demircan, Erdinç İnan Yılmaz and URGE Project company representatives.
